What the campaign is about |
The campaign for Christine concentrates on the trial “Metropolitan police against Lucky Gordon” and not the Stephen Ward trial.
Lucky Gordon had a history of violence and violence against woman, he even admitted in court that he had assaulted Christine.
Christine did lie about how many people were present when the assault took place. She denied two men were present. Two men who pressured her to deny they were there, two men who later in court would confirm Christine was assaulted.
She didn't lie about being assaulted, in fact there was never any doubt that she was assaulted. She had lied about how many witnesses there were.
Think about that, a woman is assaulted, goes to the police, and goes to prison.
Not because she lied about being assaulted but because there were more people who saw her being assaulted.
History then painted her as the villain.

In December 1963 Christine pleaded guilty to the crime of perjury - she took a deal and did not contest the charge as she had been advised that her best course of action to avoid a long prison sentence was to plead guilty and beg for the court's mercy.
At this time Christine was a pariah in the minds of the press and public and a fair trial would have been impossible.
As Christine pleaded guilty, the full details of her side of the story did not play out in court.

The case against Lucky Gordon led to Christine’s prison sentence and her conviction for perjury. This conviction for perjury took away Christine’s ability to defend herself from some of the lies that have been told about her, somebody convicted of perjury cannot be defamed. So anybody to say anything they wanted about Christine and they often did.
It also meant Christine’s version of events, her story could be dismissed as the lies of a convicted perjurer. Perversely, Christine’s conviction for perjury has since been used as the legal basis for Stephen Ward's conviction to be overturned.
